William George ‘Willie’ Quaife. Warwickshire & England 1894-1928. Two original single page typed letters from Quaife to Leslie Deakins, Secretary of Warwickshire C.C.C., both on ‘Quaife and Lilley’ official business letterhead. In the first, dated 17th February 1949, Quaife is replying to a letter regarding rights to the sale of ‘Cricket material’ on the ground at Edgbaston. He is uncertain what the value of the arrangement would be, but offers the club £50 for the rights for a year, ‘to include the hire of the showcase now in the Pavilion’. In the follow-up letter dated 18th March 1949 Quaife agrees to the terms and conditions, and that ‘B.W. Quaife [his son] will come down shortly to make final arrangements. Both letters nicely signed in ink ‘W.G. Quaife’. Small file holes to top left corners, otherwise in very good condition.
The Birmingham ‘athletic outfitters’ business was original set up by the Quaife brothers, William and Walter, in the early 1900s. It became ‘Quaife and Lilley’ when another Warwickshire player, Richard Lilley joined the firm.
