In the Essex v Australia tour match played at Leyton the match was drawn. Essex were bowled out in their first innings for only 178, Victor Trumper taking 5-33 (his first five wickets in an innings in first class matches and his best bowling analysis. Australia replied with a declared total of 249-8, Clem Hill making 104. Essex in their 2nd innings reached 13-2 before rain intervened and caused the abandonment in the afternoon of the 3rd day
