Evelyn Maitland ‘Lyn’ Wellings. Oxford University & Surrey 1928-1946. Oxford University cricket cap worn by Wellings whilst playing for the University from 1928-1931. The navy blue cap by `Castell & Son of Oxford’ with University emblem to front, name to inside label with Ch-Ch (Christ Church College) beneath. Some wear to inner otherwise in good condition. Sold with a further M.C.C. touring cap. The [unusually] in white/creme, by E.C. Devereux of Eton, with central emblem of St. George & the Dragon to front. ‘Wellings’ handwritten to inner label. A rarely seen white/creme tour cap. Sold with two cricket scarves/neckerchiefs worn by Wellings. Some wear to the neckerchief
As far as we are aware Wellings did’nt play for M.C.C. but did cover M.C.C. tours as a journalist, perhaps he was given the cap by a player whilst on tour. We recently sold a similar cap of Ken Cranston’s for the tour of the West Indies in 1947/48
