Cricket and sporting illustrations late 1920s/1930s. Three artist’s sketch books comprising an extensive selection totalling approx. eight hundred original and very competently hand drawn and painted colour caricatures of sports men and women of the period in the manner of the artist ‘Mac’ who produced artwork for cigarette cards issued by John Player & Sons in 1927. ‘Book No. 1’ comprises thirty six illustrations over seven pages, of cricketers and footballers executed in red and green ink. ‘Book No. 2’ with some 396 drawings of footballers, cricketers, horse racing jockeys, trainers and owners, and other sports including athletics, cycling, tennis, boxing, billiards, golf, rugby etc. in red, green and purple. The third volume, titled ‘Section II No. 40’ over 370 drawings of sporting celebrities, each page individually dated from 5th January to 26th October 1930, the drawings in red, green and purple. Cricketers depicted throughout are captioned Hendren, Freeman, Duckworth, Ames, Fender, D.R. Jardine A.E.R. Gilligan, J.B. Hobbs, A.W. Carr, Percy Holmes etc. Footballers include James (Arsenal), Maddison (Hull), Dominy (Orient), Galloway (Spurs), Townrow (Chelsea), Avey (Fulham), Dixie Dean (Everton) etc. Each book measures 14”x9” with contemporary brown paper wrappers and handwritten title to fronts. Minor foxing to some pages, some soiling to wrappers, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
