M.C.C. tour of South Africa circa 1913-1914. Large excellent sepia portrait photograph of four of the South African Test players who played in the series, Herbie Taylor, Arthur William ‘Dave’ Nourse, Claude Carter and Joe Cox plus George Cox of Sussex who was coaching in South Africa, Nourse sitting centrally in a chair, next to George Cox who is also sat in a chair with the other three standing and leaning behind and to the sides. The photograph laid down to photographers mount and signed to the borders in ink by all four of the South African players. Photograph by The Kan Studio, Cuthbert’s Buildings, Durban, impressed stamp to lower border. The photograph measures 10”x12” and overall with mount 13.75”x19.5”. Some corner loss to the top right hand corner and very slight loss to the top left hand border of the mount otherwise in good condition. This photograph was formerly in the collection of George Cox (senior), handwritten inscription to verso ‘Ex George Cox Family Collection’
George Cox (senior) Sussex 1895-1928 coached in South Africa and apparently according to a Sussex historian taught Herbie Taylor the art of front and back play. The signature of Joe Cox is very small, having checked previously sold items signed by Cox, he did sign his signature very small compared to others
