Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack 1900. 37th edition. Original hardback. Minor wear to board extremities, some breaking to internal hinges, some loss of text to yellow front end paper and yellow title page otherwise in good/very good condition with gilt titles bright. A rare early hardback edition. The book was presented to Major Robert Montagu Poore. Hampshire & South Africa 1895-1906 by Harry Luff, owner of John Wisden & Co to commemorate Poore being named one of ‘Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year’ in 1900. The book is sold with the original letter sent by Luff on John Wisden & Co headed paper and dated 31st January 1900 which reads ‘Please accept ‘Wisden’ for 1900 with our very best wishes. We are sending to c/o Lord Roberts and sincerely hope it may afford you some pleasure perusing when you have time. Yours most overtly John Wisden & Co. Henry Luff’. The book, loosely held in a brown folder, with gilt titles to spine, has handwritten ink page references, probably written by Poore, to the blank end paper to the pages in which he appears.

Robert Montagu Poore had a sensational season in 1899, topping the batting averages with a total of 1551 runs scored at an average of 91.23, hitting seven centuries with a highest score of 304 v Somerset at Taunton,. He features in the centre of the photographic p[late of the ‘Five Cricketers of the year’

Mr. Henry (Harry) Luff was the proprietor of Wisden’s Cricketers’ Almanack and of the firm of Messrs John Wisden of 8 Cranbourn Street 1884-1910. He died on July 18th 1910
