‘Our Village. Sketches of Rural Character and Scenery’. Mary Russell Mitford. A collection of the five volumes published from Mitford’s series, ‘Our Village’ drawn from scenes and characters based upon her life in the village of Three Miles Cross in Berkshire. Comprises Volume I third Edition, London 1825, which includes a chapter, ‘A Country Cricket Match’, Volume II second edition 1827, and Volume III first edition 1828. All three published by Geo. B. Whittaker, Ave Maria Lane, printed by R. Gilbert, St. John’s Square, London. ‘Fourth series’ first edition 1830, and Volume V second edition 1832, both published by Whittaker, Treacher & Co., Ave Maria Lane, and printed by Gilbert & Rivington, Printers, St. John’s Square, London. Padwick 5906. All bound in original matching quarter leather with marbled boards, endpapers and page edges, raised bands and leather title labels to spines. All volumes with damage and/ or loss to spines, some wear to boards with some partially detached. All internally in very good condition.
Our Village is a collection of about one hundred literary sketches of rural life written by Mary Russell Mitford, and originally published during the 1820s and 1830s. The series first appeared in The Lady’s Magazine.
