‘Lambert’s Cricketer’s Guide or Instructions and Rules, for playing the Noble Game of Cricket...’. William Lambert. Sussex Press, Lewes. First Edition 1816. Printed and published by J. Baxter. ‘Illustrated by an Elegant Copper-Plate Engraving’. 55pp. Handsomely bound in full calf with raised bands and gilt title label to spine, original stiffened paper wrappers retained. Includes the folded frontispiece engraving of the ‘Cricketing’ scene, with a match in progress in the Paddock, a field below Lewes Castle, with a key to fielding positions. To the front endpaper is the ownership signature in ink of Emmanuel Percival Thorley. Roger Hancock, in his ‘A Handbook for William Lambert’s Guide’, states that this is only one of some twelve authenticated editions that contain a date of issue in the particulars of the book. A copy of this rare first edition successor to ‘Boxall’s Guide’ was sold by Christies in the 2014 sale of the Hancock collection. Padwick 383. Some wear to the original wrappers, otherwise in remarkably good condition.
