‘Gentlemen v. Players’ Centenary match 1906. Early original commemorative silk scorecard for the match played at Lord’s, 9th- 11th July 1906. The Gentlemen elected to bat first and were bowled out for 167 with Arthur Fielder taking all ten wickets for 90 runs. Bernard Bosanquet was the top scorer with 56, Stanley Jackson made 40. The Players gained a first innings lead of 32, being dismissed for 199, Tom Hayward with 54, David Denton 48, Neville Knox taking 5/73. In the second innings, the Gentlemen reached 321, Reggie Spooner (114) and Harry Foster (67) shared an opening stand of 156. Gilbert Jessop made 73no, Walter Lees took 6/92. Set 290 to win, the Players could not cope with the pace of Knox who took a further seven wickets, giving him match bowling figures of twelve wickets for 183 runs. The Players were bowled out for 244 (Ernie Hayes 55, Lees 51), the Gentlemen winning by 45 runs. The silk scorecard is wrapped by the side edges around card and taped to verso. Overall 6.25”x11.5”. Very good condition.
The first Gentlemen v Players fixture was played at Lord’s in July 1806, and continued until the amateur status of cricketers was abolished by the M.C.C. in 1963.
