‘England v. Australia’. Triangular Test Tournament 1912. Rare original commemorative silk scorecard for the ‘timeless’ Test played at Kennington Oval commencing 19th August 1912. In the final match of the series England batted first and reached 245 (Jack Hobbs 66, Frank Woolley 62). In reply, Australia, captained by Syd Gregory in his final Test match, were bowled out for 111, Syd Barnes and Frank Woolley taking five wickets apiece. England were then bowled out for 175, C.B. Fry top scorer with 79, Australia’s Gervys Hazlitt returning his best figures in first-class cricket of 7/25. Set an unlikely 310 to win on a wet wicket described as ‘better suited to water polo’, England bowled Australia out for only 65 to win by 244 runs, Woolley taking a further five wickets to return match bowling figures of ten wickets for 49 runs. The silk scorecard measures approx. 6.75”x10”, lightly laid down to black page. Formerly the property of E.R. Wilson. Very good condition.
The Triangular Tournament of 1912 comprised nine Test matches held in England and this, the final match of the series was the first ‘timeless Test’ ever to be played. The tournament was not considered a success. Australia were weakened due to player disputes, the English summer was one of the wettest on record, the matches between Australia and South Africa generated little public interest and the venture was not repeated. England won the tournament with four wins, two draws and no losses.
