‘The Sportsman’s Magazine. Volume I’. Hodgson & Co., Newgate Street, London 1824. Bound in contemporary brown boards with later replacement spine. Includes three frontispiece engravings, one of ‘The Otter Hunt at Ewton, Devonshire’ facing another of a scene with general sporting activities surrounding a plinth bearing the title ‘The Sportsman’s Magazine Vol. 1’ and publication details and date of 1824 below. This is followed by a fold-out engraving of a rowing match on the Thames, ‘The Contest for Doggett’s Coat & Badge. A prize rowed for every 1st of August’ published by Hodgson & Co. Sections on cricket on pp. 45-48 with scores and summaries of matches for Barristers, Hereford, Epsom, Kingscote, Camberwell, Kingston, also England v Hampshire, with mention of E.H. Budd and Ward. pp. 94-96 reports on the match Nottingham v Leicester and other clubs, pp. 148-150 feature full scores for Sussex v Godalming etc. Padwick 1211-3. Some wear to original boards, nick to the edge of the fold-out engraving, otherwise in good/ very good condition. Very rare.
According to Padwick, three volumes of the magazine were published 1823-25.
