New Zealand Cricketers’ Annual 1897 and 1898. Edited by ‘”Trundler” of Thames’ (William Henry Newton). Abel, Dykes & Co., Auckland 1897 (third year of issue) & 1898 (fourth and final year). Two issues bound as one volume in maroon leather, gilt title to spine, red speckled page edges. Original wrappers for both issues retained. Originally from the collection of A.D. Taylor with ‘A.D. Taylor’s copy’ annotated to front endpaper, and ‘Alfred D. Taylor. Collector of Cricketana’ bookplate labels and stamps to inside front board and internal pages. M.C.C. bookplate to inside front board. ‘Complimentary copy A. D. & Co [publisher]’ annotated in ink to head of front wrapper of the 1897. Annotation in ink to the list of ‘Centuries in Test Matches for Australia’, p.208 of the 1898, apparently in Taylor’s own hand, ‘Compiled by F.A. Ashley-Cooper, A.D.T.’. Padwick 3755. Fading to spine with small loss to head of spine. Minor creasing to original front wrapper of the 1897 issue, slight breaking to front internal hinge with Contents page partially detached at spine. Some age toning to original wrappers, otherwise in good/ very good condition. Rare final two editions of the publication which ran for only four years (first issued in 1895).
William Newton was a teacher and bowler for the Tararu team, he played in the Thames Cricket Association, hence ‘Trundler’ of Thames.
