‘Angliae Notitia or the Present State of England’. Edward Chamberlayne. ‘The Nineteenth edition, with great Additions and Improvements’. Printed by T. Hodgkin for R. Chiswell etc., London 1700. Rebound in black calf with raised bands and gilt title to spine, red page edges. A very early mention of cricket on p.48, ‘The Natives will endure long and hard labour in so much, that after 12 hours hard Work, they will go in the evening to Foot-ball, Stool-ball, Cricket...’. Padwick 856 refers to the edition of 1707. A loosely inserted note handwritten in ink refers to J.W. Goldman’s copy of this book. Bookplate of A.E. Winder to inside front cover, who purchased this copy from E.K. Brown in 1974. Trimming by the binder a little tight to top of page edges in places, otherwise in very good condition.
