Maurice John Dauglish. Middlesex & Oxford University 1886-1890. ‘Eton v Harrow 1886’. Nicely presented file comprising a collection of six original and other facsimile copies of letters written to Dauglish by notable cricketing Old Harrovians. Dauglish was appointed Captain of the Harrow team for the 1886 season, and the letters date from 1882 when he was a 14 year old Colt, up to and immediately following the annual fixture at Lord’s against Eton in 1886, in which Harrow were surprisingly defeated by six wickets. Original handwritten letters (unless stated) from correspondents offering their tips on captaincy and other cricketing matters are Robert Grimston (Oxford University & Middlesex 1838-1851) arranging a practice session for the Colts in 1882. William Law (Oxford University & Yorkshire 1871-1874), advising Dauglish on the need for a good slow lob bowler after Harrow’s victory over Eton in 1885. I.D. ‘Donny’ Walker (Middlesex 1862-1884), four pages of detailed instructions such as the positioning of mid-on when not using a short-leg, who to bowl and when etc. Earl of Bessborough (F.G.B. Ponsonby) (Cambridge University & Surrey 1834-1839) wishing ‘a glorious success’ on the eve of the 1886 match. I.D. Walker (facsimile copy letter) the day after the defeat to Eton in which he expresses his regrets that Dauglish did not bowl himself enough but not to reproach himself, and further letters of support and commiseration from Manley Kemp (Kent & Oxford University 1880-1895) in a joint letter with his brother Arthur, the ‘Chiddleton Kemps’, A.J. Webbe (Oxford University, Middlesex & England 1875-1900) (facsimile), and a further original letter from the Earl of Bessborough. A fascinating insight into the the passion shown by some famous Old Harrovians. Very good condition.
Dauglish was first selected for the annual fixture aged 17 in 1885, which Harrow won, so extending their unbeaten run over Eton to nine years. The unexpected defeat of 1886 was against an inexperienced Eton side, that did however feature notable names including H.J. Mordaunt (Captain), C.P. Foley, R.C. Gosling, and H.R. Bromley-Davenport.
