W. Methven Brownlee. Biographer of W.G. Grace. Original three page letter handwritten in ink to ‘My Dear Green’, dated 15th August 1892 on ‘The Century Club, Bristol’ letterhead. Brownlee writes to say he cannot accept an invitation to meet and describes his plans to spend ‘a whole day Thursday travelling with W.G.’, but hopes to meet Green and ‘Padwick’ with Grace, and looks forward to ‘have a long chat with you both’. He refers to ‘a stroke of luck losing the toss today, assumed to be the match Gloucestershire v Nottinghamshire at Cheltenham College, and the Gloucestershire players Ferris, Page and Radcliffe ‘spent yesterday at my place’. Very nicely signed by Brownlee. Small adhesive mark to top edge of first page, otherwise in very good condition.
Brownlee had written the first biography of W.G. Grace, published in 1887, and made a significant contribution acknowledged by Grace in his own book, ‘Cricket’, published in 1891.
