Charles Gordon. 10th Marquis of Huntly, Lord Strathavon & Earl of Aboyne. Hampshire, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey & M.C.C. 1818-1843. Signed free-front envelope to a Mrs Crawford of Eton, Windsor, dated and sent from ‘London, February nine 1819’. Very nicely signed ‘Strathavon’ in black ink to lower left corner. Rare early signature of Gordon, a right handed batsman who played thirty three first-class matches. Small loss to corners, otherwise in good condition.
Charles Gordon was born in 1792 and was known as Lord Strathavon from 1794-1836 when he became the Earl of Aboyne and succeeded as 10th Marquis of Huntly in June 1853. He died in 1863. He holds the distinction of being the only member of the aristocracy to have appeared for the Players in 1819, and for the Gentlemen in the 1827 fixture.
