‘Hambledon v. England played on Broadhalfpenny Down Sept 10, 11, 12 1908’. Rare mono real photograph postcard showing players from the first class match sitting and standing on the granite pillar which was unveiled on the opening day to honour the Hambledon Club. Players who featured in the match included C.B. Fry, Jessop, Knights, Wynyard, Hearne, Mead, Astill, Jephson etc. A rare and historic postcard. Sold with three mono real photograph postcards relating to the New Year’s Day Protest Match that took place on Broad Halfpenny Down, Hambledon, Hampshire in 1929. The match was arranged as a protest against football encroaching in to the cricket season in May and August, and was played between ‘The Invalids’, captained by the poet and parodist, J.C. Squire, and ‘The Hampshire Eskimos’ captained by E. Whalley-Tooker. Two depict the match in progress, the other shows the interruption to play by the meeting of the Hambledon Hounds. Publishers unknown. Adhesive marks to verso of all four postcards where previously laid down, otherwise in good condition. Qty 4.
