A Thomson of Windsor ‘plain match’ bat of 1847. The one piece bat with ‘Batchelor & Revel August 17th 1847’ imprinted with decorative borders in faded gold lettering and black highlighting to face across shoulders. ‘Thompson Windsor’ impressed to top of handle and to toe. The bat, with flat back becoming slightly humped to lower middle, measures 33.3”, weighing 1lb 14oz, bound handle. Sold with the late vendor’s research notes giving further information on the bat. Some signs of wear otherwise in good/ very good condition.
John Thompson’s firm was advertised as ‘Cooper and Furnishing Turners to Her Majesty’, making cricket bats as a sideline. Unspliced or ‘plain’ bats were still the choice of many local cricketers and cheaper than spliced varieties.
