The 17th Australians. Australia tour of England 1930. Exceptionally large and impressive official mono photograph of the full Australian touring party, seated and standing in rows in cricket attire and blazers. Nicely signed in ink to lower border by all fifteen players and the two officials. Players’ signatures are Woodfull (captain), Jackson, Wall, a’Beckett, Hornibrook, Hurwood, Grimmett, Fairfax, Ponsford, Richardson, Kippax, Bradman, Walker, McCabe and Oldfield. Also signed by Kelly (manager) and Howard (treasurer). The photograph measures 22.5”x16.25” and is laid to photographer’s mount, overall 31”x28”. Signature in ink ‘Bolland Photo St. Leonards’ to lower left corner of photograph and ‘Copyright’ to lower right corner. To verso the photographer’s details are annotated in ink and the owner’s name ‘H. Sutcliffe Esq’ in pencil. Official tour photographs of this size are rarely seen and were normally produced and presented to players, clubs, officials etc. This photograph was presented to Herbert Sutcliffe. Some fading to the signatures of a’Beckett and Hornibrook. Some damage to the surface of the photograph in two places, slight silvering to photograph extremities, some water staining to mount, otherwise an excellent image in good/ very good condition.
The Australians won the Test series 2-1 with two matches drawn. The outstanding batting performance of Don Bradman was the highlight of the tour. From 36 innings he scored 2960 runs with a highest score of 334 and an average of 98.66 with 10 hundreds.
