Lord Harris’ tour to Australia 1878/79. Two original sepia photographs of the touring party. The photographs each feature twelve of the thirteen players who made up the tour, which comprised Lord Harris (Captain), Charles Absolom, Tom Emmett, Leland Hone, Alfred Hornby, Alfred Lucas, Francis MacKinnon, Henry Maul, Frank Penn, Vernon Royle, Sandford Schultz, George Ulyett and Alexander Webbe. One depicts the players prior to the tour with three ladies, seated and standing in rows in a studio setting, all wearing formal attire. Approx. 7.5”x5.5”. A version of this image was published in ‘Cricket of Today and Yesterday’ by Percy Cross Standing, 1902. The other shows the players in cricket attire in front of a stand, assumed to have been taken while on tour. Approx. 8”x6.5”. Location and photographers unknown. The photographs are mounted one above the other with title panel to centre, framed and glazed in modern frame, overall 15”x22”. Very good condition.
Australia beat England in the only Test match of the series, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, winning by ten wickets.
