‘The Cricketer’s Manual for the Border Counties containing a Review and Averages for the Season 1869’. Published by Askew Roberts, Woodall, & Venables, Bailey Head, Oswestry. Comprising match scores, match reports and club averages including those of the Shropshire county team. Bound in green cloth and marbled boards, original wrappers retained, complete. Bookplate of J.W. Goldman laid down to inside front cover. Padwick 1757. Owner’s name, ‘E. Minshall’ in ink to front end paper and dated 16th December 1869. Neatly written in capitals to the title page are the initials ‘E.M.’. The Oswestry Local History Centre suggests there is supporting evidence for Ebeneezer Minshall being the author. Minshall, who died in 1933, was a well-known local musician and author of several musical titles. An obituary states that ‘he was a keen cricketer and... a familiar figure on the field, in the matches played between Oswestry and Whittington’. Goldman states in his bibliography that the book is very rare and it is believed that this is one of only three copies in existence. Minor ageing and foxing, otherwise in very good condition for the age
