Jack Hobbs Benefit Years 1914 and 1919. Commemorative silk scorecards, on one piece of silk, for Surrey v Kent, 10th & 11th August 1914, ‘War Declared 1914’ printed to bottom of scorecard, and Surrey v Kent, 18th August 1919, ‘Peace signed 1919’ printed to bottom of scorecard. Surrey won the first match by eight wickets, Hobbs made 16 and 26no. Hitch took nine wickets in the match and Blythe took 9-97 in the Surrey first innings. In the 1919 match, Surrey won by ten wickets. Hobbs made 17 & 47, Harrison 66, Ducat 76 and Hitch took eight wickets in the match. For Kent, Humphreys top scored with 59, Woolley 55 and Fairservice took 4-96 in the Surrey first innings. The scorecard laid to tightly trimmed mount card. Some age toning and wear, staining to edges, otherwise in good condition.
Hobbs’ first Benefit in 1914 was a disaster due to the outbreak of the First World War, Surrey kept the gate receipts from the match and allowed Hobbs another Benefit in 1919. His Benefit raised £1,671 and he bought his sports shop in Fleet Street with the proceeds.
