Nottinghamshire C.C.C. 1923 & 1928. Two original commemorative silk scorecards for matches played at Trent Bridge. One for Nottinghamshire v Northamptonshire, 20th & 21st June 1923 in which Northamptonshire elected to bat first and were bowled out for only 77, Matthews taking a then career best eight wickets for 39 runs. In reply, Nottinghamshire declared their innings closed at 302/3, Arthur Carr scoring 106no. Northamptonshire were then bowled out for 116, Matthews surpassing his first innings achievement taking 9/50 and ending with match figures of seventeen wickets for 89 runs, Nottinghamshire winning by an innings and 109 runs. The other is for the tour match v West Indies, produced to commemorate the Royal visit to the Trent Bridge Ground, 7th- 10th July 1928, with ‘Royal Souvenir Copy’ printed above the standard headings. The match was drawn, Nottinghamshire scoring 393 (Arthur Carr 100, Arthur Staples 84, William Whysall 80) & 246/6 dec., West Indies 378 (Barto Bartlett 109, Karl Nunes 62, Sam Staples 5/99) & 85/0. Both scorecards printed by Charles H. Richards of Nottingham and each mounted to black card with tape to verso. Slight adhesive show-through, otherwise in very good condition.
The tour fixture was rendered historic by the visit of their Majesties, King George V and Queen Mary to Trent Bridge Ground on the concluding day of the match, when the players of both teams were presented. This was the first occasion on which the King and Queen visited a cricket ground outside London.
