George Neville Weston. W.G. Grace biographer. Box comprising ten scrapbook albums and four exercise books compiled by Weston, comprising cuttings, photographs, original letters, postcards of local scenes etc., many with statistics and commentary handwritten in ink by Weston. The majority of the books relate to research carried out by Weston relating to the playing career and life of W.G., with particular emphasis on his research into minor matches in which Grace played. One album relates to W.G. Grace with cuttings of articles of obituaries, book reviews etc. with extracts of engravings of Grace, and from ‘W.G. Grace’ (‘Great Lives’ series) by Bernard Darwin 1934, and includes an early photograph titled ‘United South XI 1871’ featuring W.G. and G.F. Grace, John and James Lillywhite, T. Humphrey, J. Southerton, Jupp, Pooley etc., and another early photograph of the Gentlemen of England team v Australia 1882 at The Oval. Another album contains detailed correspondence from other cricket historians including James D. Coldham, and several librarians and regional newspaper editors, schools etc. Other albums cover subjects such as two comprising letters received in response to advertisements placed in south-western newspapers requesting background information on Grace, also The Grace Family, an album dedicated to Grace’s last Test match appearance in 1899, detailed batting analyses, ‘W.G. Grace as portrayed in “Punch”’, and smaller exercise books with titles such as ‘Curious Incidents at Cricket by W.J. Ford’, ‘”W.G.” in United South England XI matches 1869 to 1876’, ‘”W.G.” at Bradford (Yorkshire) 1873 to 1892’, and ‘”W.G.” for Phoenix v Islington June 23rd 1866’. An excellent, nicely presented archive in very good condition.
