Douglas Robert Jardine. Oxford University, Surrey & England 1920-1934. Two page handwritten letter in ink from Jardine to Percy Fender, dated 10th June 1931. Addressed to ‘Dear George’, Jardine is replying to Fender’s ‘very charming letter & the extraordinarily generous thought which prompted you to write. I know that you had something similar in your mind upon a previous occasion... it doubles my pleasure that you should have thought of doing so again’ and thanks Fender for all he has learnt from him, ‘I shall hope to continue to learn much’. The timing of the letter corresponds with Fender having tendered his resignation as captain of Surrey early in 1931 and for Jardine to take over. Fender was not dismissed until the following January (1932) and Jardine was then appointed in March. Signed ‘Douglas’. Ex Percy Fender collection. Very good condition.
Douglas Jardine captained Surrey in 1932 & 1933, and also led England in the infamous ‘Bodyline’ Ashes series in Australia 1933/34.
