Around the outside of each plate is an inspirational phrase or motto that coincides with the scene depicted. Mottos are ‘Be always as merry as ever you can, for none delight in a sorrowful man’, ‘When the wind is in the west, then the fishes bite the best’, ‘More rain more rest, fair weather isn’t always best’, ‘Man’s life’s a vapour & full of woes, he cuts a caper & down he goes’ and ‘He whipped day in, he whipped day out, but what he caught was not a trout’.
