‘Fat lot o’notice they’re taking of the Ref today. Who is it.... Arthur Deakin? ‘. Excellent and original pen and ink drawing artwork, heightened with colour, by artist Joseph Lee, depicting a football match in progress with a full stadium watching on. The players are all either kicking or fighting each other with the referee doing his best to control the match in vain. A spectator is commenting on the referee. The artwork, signed by Lee, was published in the London Evening News and is dated 15th September 1950. Some press masking to image. Overall 15”x21”. Good condition. A wonderfully evocative scene beautifully illustrated by the artist
Arthur Deakin was General Secretary of the Transport & General Workers Union and had publicly spoken out to the press about players unruly behaviour on the pitch at that time
