Thomas William ‘Tom’ Graveney. Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Queensland & England 1948-1972. Black file comprising a comprehensive and nicely presented selection of letters and other ephemera from Graveney’s personal collection. Graveney was appointed President of the M.C.C. in 2004/05, so becoming the first former professional player to hold the position. Included is his printed ‘President’s Statement’, and a typescript of an address given by him in 2005. Many of the letters congratulate him on his appointment and give thanks and praise when his tenure ended a year later, also many letters of thanks for invitations to events from former players and friends. Correspondents include a two page handwritten letter from John Major, and others signed by Derek Underwood, Raman Subba Row, Ted Dexter, Colin McDonald, J.T. Murray, Doug Insole, Peter Parfitt, Joe Hardstaff, Hubert Doggart, Dickie Bird, Michael Parkinson, Geoff Boycott, Bobby Robson etc. The collection also includes a letter dated 1988 from the publisher, Reg Hayter, relating to the removal of a chapter on Graveney’s wife, Jackie, from a book with a typescript of the chapter attached. Other items include a typed letter from the Duke of Norfolk at Arundel Castle, signed ‘Norfolk’, thanking Graveney for his help on a tour to Jamaica in 1957, a printed tribute to Graveney in his benefit year in 1959, a menu for his 70th birthday in 1997, and a further selection of original menus (some signed), invitations, an original auction catalogue for the sale of part of Graveney’s stamp collection in 2003 etc. An excellent collection from one of England’s finest batsmen of the 1950s and 1960s. Very good condition.
