Bert Sutcliffe. Auckland, Otago, Northern Districts & New Zealand 1941-1966. Plain white card with handwritten title ‘Most Memorable Test Match’ to which Sutcliffe has annotated below in ink ‘Would surely have to be the Xmas Test v South Africa at Johannesburg in 1953- a moving and unforgettable experience’. Nicely signed by Sutcliffe. Sold with a mono magazine extract of Sutcliffe in batting action, signed by Sutcliffe. Very good condition.
The Test match to which Sutcliffe refers was memorable for the unexpected appearance at the wicket of Bob Blair as New Zealand’s last man in their first innings. Blair’s fiancee had been killed two days earlier in the Tangiwai railway disaster. His appearance at the crease allowed Sutcliffe to hit three more sixes in four balls in his innings of 80no. South Africa went on to win the match comfortably by 132 runs.
