The Ashes. England v Australia 1926. Full size ‘Warren Bardsley Specially Selected’ cricket bat by Duke and Son, Penshurst. Signed in ink to the face by all sixteen playing members of the Australian touring party and thirteen members of the England team for the deciding 5th ‘Timeless’ Test at the Kennington Oval, 14th- 18th August 1926. Australian signatures are Bardsley (Captain), Collins, Ryder, Andrews, Hendry, Ponsford, Gregory, Grimmett, Oldfield, Everett, Macartney, Taylor, Woodfull, Richardson, Mailey and Ellis. England signatures are Chapman (Captain), Stevens, Tate, Larwood, Rhodes, Strudwick, Woolley, Geary, Hendren, Sutcliffe, Hobbs, Russell(?) and Tyldesley. A plaque has previously been applied to the splice with four small screw holes, the plaque now not present. Some spidering to the ink signatures, the odd signature slightly faded, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
The first four matches in the 1926 Ashes series had been drawn so the final Test was to be played out to ensure a result. The match was completed in four days, England winning by 289 runs, Hobbs (100) and Sutcliffe (161) both scoring centuries in the second innings, to take the series 1-0 and regain the urn for the first time since 1912.
