Nineteenth century cricket shirt and trousers circa 1880’s. The ‘Sports’ shirt was made by Storanco in the 1880’s. It is made from taffeta and labelled as ‘all wool’. It buttons down the front and has a long back which passes between the wearers legs and buttons at the front. This long back was designed to save the wearer from using underpants and having to wash two garments instead of one. It also provided a convenient pouch for his abdominal protector. The trousers are made from a heavy canvas type material and have been pleated many times, perhaps they were handed down and used by different generations. They have a long buttoned fly and two metal waist buttons on front and back. Their owner was M.P. Birkett who did not play first class cricket. Odd faults otherwise in good condition. Sold with the vendors notes on the items. Qty 2.
