Athletics. ‘The Miracle Mile’. Roger Bannister (England) and John Landy (Australia) 1954. Mono photographic image of Bannister and Landy approaching the finishing line in the final of the one mile race at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games at the Empire Stadium, Vancouver, Canada. The photograph, with unknown signature in bold black ink to lower portion of the image, mounted with signatures in pencil of Bannister and Landy window mounted below. Overall 12”x16”. Certificate of authenticity to verso. Some age toning and silvering to the photograph, otherwise in good condition.
Dubbed ‘The Miracle Mile’, the eagerly anticipated race featured the two men who were the first to break the four minute barrier for the mile, both having achieved the feat the previous year in 1953. Bannister overtook Landy on the final bend to take the gold medal, both men finishing in under four minutes, the first time two runners had done so in the same race.
