‘The Observer’. Original early newspaper for 7th June 1841. The front page columns 2 and 3 features a lengthy report on the match between ‘Marylebone Club and Ground against the Five Northern Counties [North]’ at Lord’s 31st May- 2nd June 1841, North won by 66 runs. The M.C.C. team comprised notable players including Tom Sewell, Charles Whittaker, Charles Taylor, James Cobbett, William Hillyer, John Bayley and Billy Good. The North team was made up of predominantly Nottinghamshire players including Samuel Dakin, Butler Parr, Joseph Guy, Thomas Barker, William Garratt and Samuel Redgate, also Tom Marsden of Yorkshire. Also featured is a notice of the match M.C.C. v St. John’s Wood to be played ‘tomorrow (Monday) at Lord’s Ground’, and a report of the match ‘Etonians and Oxford’ played at the Shooting Fields, Eton. Duty stamp to top right corner of first page. Some wear to folds and page edges, otherwise in good condition.
