‘Lord Sheffield’s Eleven 1884’. Early original sepia photograph of Lord Sheffield’s team who played the Australians at Sheffield Park, Uckfield, East Sussex on the 12-14th May 1884, standing and seated, in rows wearing blazers, caps and cricket attire. The photograph laid down to official photographers mount with title and players names to lower border. Players are W.G. Grace, A. Shaw, A. Shrewsbury, G. Ulyett, W. Flowers, Rev F.J. Greenfield, J. Hide, W. Barnes, G.P. Harrison, H.Phillips and L. Hall. The photograph measures 11”x9” and overall with mount overall 17”x13.5”. Photograph by E. Hawkins & Co of Brighton. Some wear and fading to the photograph, minor surface loss to the left hand side of the image, soiling and wear to the mount, dark vertical band of discolouration to the right hand side of the image caused by light otherwise in good condition
The Australians won by an innings and 6 runs, Bannerman top scored for the Australians with 94, Giffen and Palmer each took ten wickets in the match. Shrewsbury top scored for Lord Sheffield’s XI with 39 in the first innings
