‘Lord Sheffield’s Eleven 1890’. Original sepia photograph of Lord Sheffield’s team who played the Australian Eleven at Sheffield Park, East Sussex on the 8-10th May 1890, standing and seated, in rows wearing blazers, caps and cricket attire. The photograph laid down to official photographers mount with title and players names to lower border. Players include W.G. Grace (Cpt), Shrewsbury, Read, Stoddart, Attewell, Sherwin, Peel, Briggs, Lohmann etc. The photograph measures approx 11.5”x 9.25” and overall 15.5”x13.5”. Photograph by E. Hawkins & Co of Brighton. An excellent image. Slight age toning to mount, very slight fading to image otherwise in good condition
The Australians won by an innings and 34 runs in a low scoring match. The Australians made 191 in their first innings, Murdoch top scoring with 93, in reply Lord Sheffield’s eleven could only make a meagre 27 runs and following on made 130 all out. Ferris took 12 wickets and Turner six wickets in the match
