Edward ‘Eddie’ Gilbert. Queensland 1930-1936. Original sepia candid-style photograph of Gilbert, standing three quarter length wearing cricket attire and Queensland blazer. 3.5”x4.25”. Photographer unknown. Name annotated in ink to lower margin. Good/ very good condition.
Eddie Gilbert was an Aboriginal cricketer who played twenty three first-class matches for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield. A right arm bowler, Don Bradman described him as the fastest he faced. Having been taken from his home at the age of three, he was raised on farms in reservations north of Brisbane. As part of the Protection of Aboriginals Act of 1923, Gilbert was required to apply for written permission to leave his Aboriginal settlement each time he played in a match.
