‘Sussex County Cricket Club Bazaar, Clarence Rooms, Hotel Metropole, Brighton, December 4th, 5th & 6th, 1894. A descriptive catalogue of the Unique Collection of Cricket Trophies, Curios, Historic Bats, Balls, Early Cricket Pictures, Engravings, and Prints. Arranged by W.L. Murdoch, Esq., & Mr. Alfred J. Gaston. Exhibited in aid of the funds of the Sussex County Cricket Club’. 16 page catalogue including original printed paper wrappers bound in to later green cloth. Articles for exhibition included items from the Earl of Sheffield, W.L. Murdoch, Charles Pratt Green, Thomas Padwick, Hawkins of Brighton, Gaston etc. Printed by The Southern Publishing Company, Brighton. Annotation in ink to top edge of front wrapper, ‘With A.J. Gaston’s Comps’, slightly trimmed by the binder. Tipped in to the rear is another, smaller, catalogue for the same exhibition, titled ‘Catalogue of Articles For Sale and Exhibition Only at the President’s Stall... contributed by Lord Sheffield’ featuring a few cricket items including ‘W.G. Grace’s bat’. Printed by John Beal & Son, Brighton. Padwick 45-10. Some wear and ageing to both original catalogues, breaking to rear internal hinge causing some splitting to the spine of the second catalogue, otherwise in good condition.
According to Roger Packham in ‘Cricket In The Park. The Life and Times of Lord Sheffield 1832-1909’ (2009) ‘this bazaar was no jumble sale’, rather a somewhat grand exhibition with entertainments attended by gentry, politicians and cricketers. The three day event raised some £750 for the Club funds.
