Hugh Trumble. Victoria & Australia 1887-1904. Single page handwritten letter in the form of a testimonial/ reference, neatly written in ink by Trumble in Melbourne, dated 5th February 1892. Trumble writes ‘Mr. White has been known to me for the last two years as a ground bowler in the services of the Melbourne Cricket Club. I have always found him most energetic and trustworthy and can recommend him as a first class bowler to anybody requiring his services. He has my best wishes’. Very nicely signed ‘Hugh Trumble’. An accompanying typed label describes White as becoming a first-class umpire in England who also went abroad in that capacity with various private tours. Minor age toning and light folds, adhesive marks to verso, otherwise in very good condition.
Hugh Trumble is listed as player/cap number fifty nine in the list of Australian Test players and he played his first Test match for Australia against England at Lord’s in July 1890. He toured England on five occasions with the Australian team from 1890 to 1902, North America in 1892 and 1896 and South Africa in 1902/03. He played in thirty two Test matches for Australia and was an off break bowler and middle order batsman, brother of John William Trumble (Victoria & Australia 1883-1890). His best bowling analysis was 9-39 for Australia v South of England in 1902. He became Secretary of Melbourne C.C. in 1912, a position he held for twenty years.
