William Albert Stanley ‘Bert’ Oldfield. New South Wales & Australia 1919-1938. Interesting two page typed letter from Oldfield on his ‘W.A. Oldfield’ sports outlet business letterhead in Sydney, dated 17th November 1927. Addressed to ‘J. Rowan’ of Buchanan Street, Glasgow, Oldfield writes ‘concerning my Australian Eleven Cricket Blazer, which I loaned to you when I was in England... in order that you might copy it for our future visits and I think I also sent you with the blazer a pair of trousers’. Oldfield asks that they should be returned ‘out to me without any delay whatever, as I am wanting them urgently for the cricket season’. He continues by saying he hopes ‘to assist you materially with the next Australian Eleven, should I happen to be included in the side’ and offers his services for advertising in Australia. Very nicely signed in ink ‘W.A. Oldfield’. Some creasing to top left corner, light horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise in very good condition.
’J. Rowan’ relates to the independently owned outfitters operating in Glasgow from 1846 to 1974, specialising in school, sports and military attire, and who made cricket caps for the Australians on the 1921 tour. Rowan also published the Scottish cricket annual, ‘Rowan’s Cricket Guide’. Bert Oldfield toured England with the Australian Imperial Forces team in 1919, and was a member of four full Australian tours to England 1921-1934. A similar letter from Oldfield to Rowan of 1928, sold by Knights in November 2022, refers to blazers received by Oldfield in Australia from Rowan.
