Alfred Lyttleton. Cambridge University, Middlesex & England 1876-1887. Single page letter handwritten in ink by Lyttelton to ‘Dear Bruce’, dated 28th January 1890 from his office in London. Replying to a request, presumably to attend a function, Lyttelton writes ‘I am afraid cricket is on the 5th [which] makes it too uncertain for me to give any promise’. (Please to not placard me over Cambridge as you did last time when I had declined)’. Signed ‘A. Lyttelton’. Slight smudging to the signature, light folds, otherwise in very good condition.
Lyttelton was President of M.C.C. in 1898. He played for Worcestershire C.C.C. (not first class), played four Tests for England 1880-1884, represented England at football in 1877 and played for Old Etonians in the 1876 F.A. Cup Final. He was the first ‘Double’ International player at football and cricket. Lawyer & Statesman and Colonial Secretary 1903-1905, he served as M.P. for Warwick from 1895 to 1906.
