Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Early sepia real photograph postcard with printed title ‘The Cricket Festival Hovingham. Ranji Bowling’ with the match in progress in front of the Hall. Assumed to be published by Bramley, The Electric Printing Works, Leeds c.1911. ‘11’ printed to lower left corner. Postally unused. Very good condition.
Hovingham Hall in North Yorkshire has been owned by the Worsley family since 1563 and the cricket pitch is one of the oldest private pitches in England. Sir William Worsley, 4th Baronet, captained Yorkshire in 1928 and 1929. It is located close to the nearby parish of Gilling East where Ranjitsinhji had close ties and where he played cricket matches to raise funds for the repair of the church tower and installation of a clock in 1908.
