‘Kent v. Sussex’ 1849. Early small original double sided scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at the Higher Common Ground, Tunbridge Wells, 16th- 18th August 1849. To one side are the two innings for Kent (126 & 54), and to the verso those of Sussex (54 & 108), Kent winning by 18 runs. Notable players include W. & F. Pilch, Martingell, A. Mynn, Felix, Hillyer, Hinkly (Kent), Box, E. & W. Napper, Wisden, Bushby, King (Sussex) etc. John Wisden (Sussex) and Edmund Hinkly (Kent) both took eleven wickets in the match. Annotated in ink to the Sussex scorecard, almost certainly by C.J. Hammond (Sussex 1841-1845) from whose collection this originally came, is the comment ‘I was so poorly that I could not play the first day. Stood Umpire two last days’. Also to the Kent scorecard ‘I am going to Norwich Wednesday next’. Printer unknown. 3”x4.5”. Uneven trimming, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
