The Ashes. ‘England v. Australia’ 1882. Early and original double sided official scorecard for the second Test match to be played in England, Kennington Oval, 28th- 30th August 1882. The scorecard with complete printed scores. Australia batted first and were bowled out for only 63, top scorer was Blackham (17), R.G. Barlow taking 5/19 off 31 overs of which 22 were maidens. Replying, England were dismissed for 101, George Ulyett scoring 26 and Fred Spofforth taking 7/46. Australia then made 122 in their second innings, Hugh Massie making the top score of the match with 55. Set only 85 to win, England were going well at 51/2, until Spofforth struck, once again taking seven wickets to give him match figures of 14/90. Spofforth and Boyle took the last five wickets for only eleven runs, and England were all out for 77 (W.G. Grace 32), handing victory to Australia by the slender margin of seven runs. Small loss to top right hand corner, crease to lower right corner, slight fading to certain area of the text and minor age toning otherwise in good condition. The match was scheduled for three days but completed in two. Australia’s famous victory over a full strength England team inspired the legend of ‘The Ashes’ with the Sporting Times running a mock obituary of English cricket following their defeat
