‘Sussex v. Australians’ 1884. Early original single sided scorecard printed on yellow paper with printed scores showing the position at the close of play on the second day of the tour match played at Hove, 24th- 26th July 1884. Sussex had posted a strong 396 against a full strength Australian bowling attack with centuries from George Wyatt (112) and Henry Phillips (111), both their only first-class centuries. Australia had reached 223/5 at close of play. On the final day the Australians were dismissed for 309 (Billy Murdoch 87, Eric Midwinter 67, Walter Humphreys 6/96) and, following on bowled them out a second time for 144, Humphreys taking a further five wickets including a hat-trick for match bowling figure of eleven wickets for 166 runs. Set 58 to win, Sussex lost four wickets, three batsmen run out, and they ran out of time closing on 25/4, the match being drawn. To the verso are the details in pencil of a collection for Henry Phillips which raised £22.7s.10d. Printed by H. Crowhurst of Brighton. 5.5”x8.5”. Splitting to folds, wear and loss to edges and some creasing, overall in fragile condition.
