Australia tour to England 1886. Lord March’s XI v The Australians. Charlie Howard’s Benefit. Rare large photographic admission ticket for the match played at The Priory Park, Chichester 28th- 30th June 1886. The match was played for Charlie Howard’s (Sussex) Benefit and the admission ticket has images of Howard, Priory Park, Chichester Cathedral and Cross. Printed detail to centre reads ‘Lord March’s Eleven v The Australians. Charlie Howard begs respectfully to announce that the above match will be played for his Benefit in the Priory Park, Chichester on June 28, 29 & 30, 1886’ with some of Howard’s career highlights to lower half of ticket. Details to lower border ‘W.N. Malby. Photo, Chichester’ and ‘E.H. Martin, Writer’. The ticket complete with original strip of three entry stubs, now detached, is signed in ink ‘Charlie Howard’ and was probably presented to a member of the Australian touring party. Horizontal crease to lower portion of the ticket, wear to one corner, old tape repair to verso, otherwise in good condition.
The Australians beat Lord March’s XI by eight wickets. Giffen took 7-21 and Spofforth 6-72 for the Australians and J.C. Wootton took 6-78 for Lord March’s XI. Charlie Howard played 22 matches for Sussex from 1874-1882.
