Charles Burgess Fry. Sussex, Hampshire, Oxford University, Europeans & England 1892-1922. Double sided two page handwritten letter in ink from Fry at ‘Hamble, Hants’, to a Mr Stalworthy, dated 16th May 1922. Fry is replying to a request for advice on how best to grip a cricket bat. Fry goes into some detail, opening with ‘If you ground a bat near your right toe and keep it nearly upright between the first two fingers of your right hand and then, without thinking how, let your left hand take its grip quite naturally you will have what I consider the best initial left-hand grip. You will find I expect that thus the back of the left-hand is full towards cover or extra cover. Ranji & I think Trumper held their bats thus’. He also refers the correspondent to a book ‘called Batsmanship by [Fry] published by Evelyn Nash. The book contains all the relevant details... (I have no interest in the sale! as I sold the copyright outright)’. Signed to the extreme lower right corner, ‘C.B. Fry’. Horizontal and vertical folds, some soiling, otherwise in good condition.
