M.C.C. tour to Australia 1928/29. Original and rare single sided printed card titled ‘A Message for the New Year’. The card, with borders in M.C.C. colours of red and gold, M.C.C. emblem to top, with illustration below depicting a lion playing the guitar in front of the Lord’s pavilion, with a kangaroo on drums and Springbok on saxophone either side. Below is the printed title and eight line poem looking forward to 1929, with the England team touring Australia, and the South Africans visiting England later that summer. The card has been signed in black ink, probably during the 3rd Test at Melbourne, 29th December- 5th January 1929, by all sixteen playing members of the M.C.C. touring party and twelve of the Australian team of 1928/29. Twenty eight signatures in total. England signatures are Chapman (Captain), Hammond, Duckworth, Hobbs, Tate, Hendren, Larwood, Ames, Geary, Jardine, Sutcliffe, Leyland, Tyldesley, White, Freeman and Mead. Australian signatures are Ryder (Captain), Kippax, Oldfield, Grimmett, Hendry, Oxenham, Blackie, a’Beckett, Woodfull, Jackson, Andrews, and an early signature of Don Bradman. The card measures 6”x8.75” with some soiling, light creasing, wear to edges, and adhesive marks to verso where previously laid down, otherwise in good condition. Not previously sold by Knights.
England won the five match ‘Timeless Test’ series of 1928/29 four matches to one to retain the Ashes.
