Doulton Lambeth stoneware tobacco jar, hand decorated with six moulded relief vignettes of cricketers to each arched roundel, three in various batting poses, one in wicket-keeping pose and two in fielding pose with an impressed overall flower motif on the brown background. Darker brown rim and base with beaded decoration. The tobacco jar is sadly lacking its lid, the lid should be with small blue flowers and ivy decoration surrounding a figure of a crouching batsman as the finial. 4” tall. Incised to base with Doulton Lambeth and makers mark for Matilda Marilyn and incised date of 1882. Good/very good condition. A rare Doulton Lambeth item
Knights sold a similar tobacco jar (hammer price 4700), complete with lid around twenty years ago. A further similar example was a cricket tobacco jar, described as ‘one of less than five examples known to exist’, was sold in the Crump sale of 2006 (hammer price £4000) which had slight differences to it. A similar example of this tobacco jar can be found in the Wisden Book of Cricket Memorabilia, page 157
