Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Two page handwritten letter from Ranjitsinhji to A.J. Gaston regarding a request for an article to be written on the ‘History of the Sussex Cricket Club, of about 1000/1500 words to be ready by the end of next week’. He then lists his requirements that the article should cover, the history of the club, its great players at various periods and their chief successes, the present administration of the club and other important details. ‘Present this in your usual thorough manner... I should if possible like an History of the M.C.C. the same way...’. The letter headed in ink by Ranjitsinhji ‘The Norfolk Hotel, Brighton’ (on Charing Cross Hotel headed paper) and dated ‘Saturday’, nicely signed in black ink by Ranjitsinhji. Wear to letter extremities with slight loss to edge of text, folds, age toning otherwise in good condition.
These requests were almost certainly for ‘The Jubilee Book of Cricket’ first published in 1897. Ranjitsinhji, apparently, wrote very little of the book and Gaston was amongst those drafted in to write it.
