‘Gentlemen of England v. Players of England. James Lillywhite’s Benefit’ 1881. Large, early and very decorative single sided scorecard for the match played at Hove, 8th- 10th August 1881. The scorecard printed on green paper with borders of flowers around all four sides, with complete printed scores for the match which the Players won by one run. In a very close game, the Players making 204 with R.G. Barlow top scoring with 54no and Appleby taking six wickets for the Gentlemen , the Gentlemen in reply made exactly the same score of 204 with A.N. Hornby making 69, Bates (5) and Barnes (4) taking nine wickets between them. In reply. In their second innings the Players made 112 with Selby making 46 and Steel taking seven wickets for the Gentlemen, Set 113 to win the Gentlemen failed by two runs making 111 all out with Alfred Shaw taking six wickets for 19 runs off 26.1 overs. Players featured include Ullyet, Shrewsbury, Barnes, Barlow, Emmett, Shaw, Steel, Horrnby, Tylecote, Bettesworth etc. Advertisements to front for Henry Crowhurst, Printer of Brighton. 8.25”x10.5”. Some light foxing to card otherwise in remarkably good condition.
James Lillywhite was a monumental figure in cricket, serving as the first England Test captain in 1877 and a fixture for Sussex, having not missed a county match between 1862 and 1881. This was James Lillywhite’s first benefit match; a second was held later in his career in 1889
